Youth Academic Skills Empowerment Challenge
Just how much influence does participation in youth sports have on a student’s life? Although its impact hasn’t yet been fully measured, we do know that an estimated 66% of boys and 52% of girls are already on organized teams by age 6.. Now, let’s compare that to the number of children who are seniors in high school and nearing graduation, that seem to lack basic life skills. According to a recent report citing the National Center for Education Statistics:
- 39% of 12th-grade students have the mathematics skills and 38 percent the reading skills needed for entry-level college courses, according to results on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
These statistics, showing 61% of students are not ready for college, are worrisome for the student, employer and the American economy:
- It’s harder for the student because he or she will have to take remedial courses in college, which may not be covered under grants and will cost directly out of pocket. Plus, it will take longer to work towards their degree, which may lead to frustration and higher dropout rates.
- For an employer, this means less qualified workers are in the job pool to select from and he or she is forced to look elsewhere for more technical, better-qualified employees.
What if we could stem this negative tide of unprepared students by merging academics with the sports kids already love playing?
YASEC offers an easy and fun academics solution to improving attitudes towards learning.
YASEC (Youth Academic Skills Empowerment Challenge) is an innovative academics based program that integrates technology with the sports kids are already playing. Beginning with football, YASEC will soon be available for student athletes in a variety of sports.
At YASEC, we want to change how youth athletes view studying and academics. Through study and competitive online testing, YASEC will encourage student athletes to study as hard as they play.
YASEC creates more opportunities for more students to become WINNERS. A team may lose the athletic contest but by winning the academic contest their self-esteem soars and their attitudes towards learning improves. Even if a team has won the athletic contest but loses the academic challenge, the student will want to pursue winning at every level, and will try harder during the next competition.
